De très belles perles !
BTW, what's happening in your country is... kind of horrible. I do not want to be a jerk, but there is a big problem in the mentalities O_o'
Well it's been going on since the beginning. This isn't a new problem that just happened, minorities especially blacks have had it rough for a long time. Police beating people, riots, shootings along racial lines, this is nothing new. It's something we keep ignoring, but really needs attention. It doesn't bother me that you're saying that our mentality is fucked up, I've known that for a while now. Still I have heard that people from the Middle East and North Africa are having about as rough a time in Europe as minorities in my nation. Is that true, or is it just made up?
From what I know in my country (and that's just my opinion), French people are really happy to go to north Africa in holidays (well, a lot less than usual since the last suicide attacks in Tunisia...). They love the people when they're at the Maghreb, think they're really cool, funny, gentle and great people. But, when they're back in France? It's not the same. When there are Arab people in their work who are dressed just like regular French people, it's ok, they like them, they are friendly etc... When there are Arab people in ghettos and/or wearing sports gears? OHMYGODBETTERRUNAWAYFROMTHEM. They are stigmatized as thugs or thieves, or even worse.
Same for Romanian people, you are sure that if they are in caravans with all their family, French people dislike them. They are also stigmatized as thugs or thieves.
In fact, in France, if you live differently than a "regular European" (clothes, speaking, house ...), you are stigmatized. Once you live as everyone else, a big majority is ok with you even if you have a different skin color. Also, mixed-race people are known as beautiful people. The word "Race" doesn't exist in French to differentiate people of different colors (I was shocked the first time I heard that word in English because we only use this word for animals species. You know, if you use this word in France for "white race", "black race" etc... you will be stigmatized as racist or even KKK sympathizer). But unfortunately, the Police also kills more black/arab/romanian people than white. I don't know if it is "justified" or not (well, death is never justified...) as I am not a Judge. We also have that party... "Front National" which is ... well, quite racist... and which makes sometimes quite good results.
So I know my country isn't the best at accepting the differences, but I think we are not the worst. But it is rough for them, sure.
My ancestry, at least on my mom's side is Eastern European. I believe my great grandpa was either Czech, or Hungarian, and I think his family where gypsies, or vagabonds. I think my great grandmother was Serbian. So yeah, my grandfather faced persecution here in the States. He served as an infantryman in the United States Army, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. That didn't matter, his parents came over in 1914, that didn't matter, because his last name was Shiftar. So to everyone else, that screamed East European, which screamed Communist. My mother even got the same treatment, she got called a Communist by everyone in school, and she came home in tears, because she had no idea what it meant. She was too young to realize what the Cold War was, and too young to understand that her maiden name was the reason people hated her. So yeah, I never faced that, because the Soviet Union was dead and burred when I was born, and my last name is Kenyon which is either Irish or Scottish. So it wouldn't have mattered anyway. Yeah, I know that people from Eastern Europe have been discriminated everywhere, and like I said it happened here in the States, because it happened to my family. Front National sounds like a Fascist movement. Which I heard that their might be a rebirth of Fascism in Europe, so it's nice to see we have learned nothing from World War 2, and the Nazi war machines march through Europe. I guess these people that support this group wish that their homeland was still occupied by the Third Reich. I can't imagine anyone wanting that back, especially since Germany, and Italy suffered heavily from their Fascist governments. Italy at the time of the Allied invasion of Sicily with Operation Husky, had an economy that was hemorrhaging cash. And Germany was totally on the ropes with Operation Citadel being a colossal flop, and Operation Overlord was right around the corner. Everyone saw the writing on the wall, except for Hitler, who refused to see it until the Red Army was marching through Berlin. So yeah, if you idiots want Fascism, have at it, because I doubt you're going to do better than the nations that got destroyed by it. I for one agree with Churchill: "It is said that Democracy is the worst form of government, except all the others that have been tried."
I’ll try to watch your movie if I find it.
Personally I don’t think it is an insult to be treated as a communist. Communism is an utopia: all people must have the same things and no social classes = treat people equally, no more poor people. Maybe that’s not the best utopia but it’s not a bad thing (I think it’s even better than the capitalism we have). Unfortunately it was done very very badly in Russia & Cie, and with the war URSS/USA it was stigmatized as bad. But the first idea is good. Too bad an utopia will stay an utopia and never become reality.
For the Front National, I don’t think it is a facist party. Xenophobe (even racist), anti-EU and populist, yes. But the facism also includes the fact that you are extremely bad toward other parties (sometimes even want to “kill” them) and you want to make a big deep changments in the government (aka becoming the only and true ruler of your country), and from what they say they don’t want it. But I know that there is a different between what a party says and what a party really does. Facism = populist, totalitarian & nationalist. FN = nationalist & populist.
Actually in Europe there is a big nationalist, xenophobe and anti-EU movement. Not yet facism (I hope it won’t become facist…), especially due to the economic crisis and the high number of immigrants (you know, you always have to find victims for the shit you do or you allow).
And I agree with Churchill too for this sentence.
